Tonality in folk music

Notam got engaged by Per Åsmund Omholt at the Department of Folk Culture, Telemark University College, to assist in technical analysis of the recording of Norwegian folk music, especially issues surrounding “half” intervals, ie pitches that do not belong in the usual diatonic system. The work was about finding out how it is possible to analyze the relationships between the course of the singer and the perceived pitch of the listener. Furthermore, we proposed strategies for analyzing a larger material with folk music, where a statistical approach would be needed. The analysis was conducted by Henrik Sundt and Magnus Bugge.
